Hi Susan D. Literary could certainly be considered another genre, although I think splitting everything into genres to begin with is a slippery slope as it leads to ranking of the genres, as CJ points out.

Hi CJ. I agree: all that really matters is the writer and the reader and the story they share.

I proudly call myself a genre writer and when I talk to writers that reach so hard to classify themselves as literary I have to wonder "Why?"

What does it matter what we call our work as long as we tell a good story that engages the reader? We may not all write to the same audience, but in no way does that lower the value or intelligence of one audience versus another.

Great post and I loved your example!

hi Jeff!

I like to think that my soy chai has no calories at all. Don't tell me that's not true. Please. Jamba Juice is so bright and orange. I think I'd have to write something set in 1962 if I worked there. Hmmm..that's the year after the Berlin Wall went up...a story there?

I like the Soy Chai Latte from Peets. I usually drink it hot tho. Starbucks Green Tea Frappucino is good (380 cal for 16oz), but I discovered that Jamba Juice has an amazing Matcha Green Tea Blast. It's goooood and only 290 cal for 16oz!

The way I've heard it, literary is simply another genre.

Hi Jeff! Tough questions. I'm working on something now that feels like a big leap forward, but only the readers and time can judge it, right? It's certainly not for me to go around denigrating other people's art.

Jumping jacks are good exercise, but hard on your knees if you do too many. Not that I've ever done too many. ;)

Some art is evolutionary and some is revolutionary. Does the artist know that when they are creating it? Does that mean the consumers of the art like it any more or less?

I hate meaningless categorization too.

Are jumping jacks good exercise? :-)

My friend, Mysti Berry, kindly sent me a biography that recently came out. I wish it had been published five years earlier! It is invaluable.

Re: tech writers. They do not, by and large, ever work under reasonable conditions. As for unrealistic deadlines held over their heads, well I think that applies to most of us these day.

Thanks for the comment, Judy!

I am grateful that you have revealed the reason that tech manuals often come off as fiction. So, tech writers are not idiots, they are involuntary soothsayers, conjuring the best reality they can muster with unrealistic deadlines held over their heads. Makes waterboarding look refreshing.

It certainly is a puzzle that so little has been written about such a prominent figure as Rohm, but I suspect you have nailed it with your speculation, that he was so gay the Nazi scholars wouldn't claim him, and so Nazi that the gay scholars shunned him as well.
